Shoshone Pet Rescue (SPR) is a non-profit organization that has its roots in the early 1990's with the efforts of Karin Clark-Reed who began adopting dogs out of the pound so they would not be euthanized. In 1994 Betsy Beresford began fostering dogs from the Kootenai Humane Society for Second Chance Pet Rescue. It was a chance encounter over a homeless cattle dog named "Annie" that brought Karin and Betsy together. Soon Karin and Betsy began arranging adoptions for dogs in the Kellogg pound, as well as adoption shows at the Silverlake Mall. These shows were always very successful, they found homes for all the dogs they could. Initially, Karin and Betsy were working solely to save the animals who were to be euthanized. Over time they began to build trust with the police department and a relationship with the animal control officer and they were able to keep dogs at the pound for longer periods of time by paying a boarding fee to the city. Once Karin and Betsy established a good realtionship with the city and a way to keep the dogs from being euthanized they began having evey dog spayed or neutered and charging an adoption fee to cover the costs. In the years that SPR has operated in Shoshone County, Idaho, we have successfully placed over 1400 pets into permanent, loving homes.

Today the dedicated membership of the Shoshone Pet Rescue continue the work begun by Karin and Betsy. Every animal brought into the Kellogg Pound is cared for by volunteers who clean the kennels, feed and water, and walk the dogs 2 times a day, 7 days a week. We continue to do adoption shows and work our hardest to find every animal a loving home.

The primary objectives of the Shoshone Pet Rescue are to build a "no-kill" animal shelter, to aid in the rescue and rehabilitation of abused and abandoned animals, to provide humane care and treatment for all animals needing protection in the area served by SPR, to seek to return lost animals to their owners, to seek suitable homes for animals without homes and to provide euthanasia when it is deemed as a humane means to end an animals suffering.
